Understanding High Cholesterol

High cholesterol is a condition that results from too much cholesterol in the blood. Causes include overeating, lack of exercise, smoking, and alcohol. Fatty foods in particular can raise cholesterol levels. Some foods, like whole grains and vegetables, can actually reduce cholesterol. It can also be dealt with through treatment, medication, and lifestyle changes.

Detecting High Cholesterol

There are usually no symptoms of high cholesterol. The best way to detect it is with a blood test. Regular screenings are recommended, especially for older adults.

Good vs. Bad Cholesterol

Some cholesterol is good for you. Good cholesterol, or HDL, actually helps control your ‘bad’ cholesterol, or LDL. Bad cholesterol can accumulate in your arteries and restrict blood flow.
